Among a career full of milestones, the 2026 FIFA World Cup may become the defining chapter of Vozinha's story. In a tournament filled with superstars, it was the goalkeeper from the island of São Vicente who captured the world's attention.

When Cabo Verde stepped onto the pitch for its first ever World Cup match, on 15 June 2026 in Atlanta, few expected the Blue Sharks to challenge one of football's traditional teams. Pre-match betting markets had Spain as overwhelming favourites, with Cabo Verde's chances of winning priced at roughly one percent. What followed became one of the most remarkable performances of the tournament.

Ninety minutes against Spain

Over the course of ninety unforgettable minutes, the whole team faced relentless pressure. Spain dominated possession, created chance after chance, and fired 27 shots towards goal, seven of them on target. Time and again, however, the Cape Verdean goalkeeper stood firm.

With seven crucial saves, outstanding positioning and remarkable composure, Vozinha refused to be beaten. Every save seemed to lift the belief of his teammates and the hopes of an entire nation. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 0–0.

For Cabo Verde, it felt like a victory. For the football world, a new hero had emerged.

Vozinha was named Man of the Match — recognition not only for his saves but also for his leadership, determination and calmness under extraordinary pressure.

A career, not an overnight story

Almost overnight, his popularity exploded beyond Africa and into the global spotlight. Before the match, Vozinha had around 50,000 Instagram followers. Within a day, that figure had reportedly grown to nearly 15 million. Fans from every corner of the world wanted to know more about the goalkeeper whose courage and charisma had become one of the defining stories of the World Cup.

But the truth is that this was never an overnight story.

Vozinha's full name is Josimar José Évora Dias, born in Mindelo — made his debut for Cabo Verde in September 2012, in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon. Since then, he has become the second most capped player in the history of the Cape Verdean national team. He represented the Blue Sharks at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, 2015, 2021 and 2023 before finally reaching football's biggest stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, at the age of forty.

His club career has carried him across Cabo Verde, Angola, Moldova, Portugal, Cyprus and Slovakia. More than a decade of work, belief, and preparation.

The rest of the Blue Sharks

This story is not Vozinha's alone. The Blue Sharks earned their place on that pitch together, and the ninety minutes against Spain were a team effort built on years of growth.

  • Ryan Mendes, also born in Mindelo, is the all-time top scorer in Cape Verdean history with 22 international goals and 94 caps. He is the captain figure of this generation and the team's main attacking reference.
  • Bebé, the experienced winger with a long career in European football, brings build-up play and defensive cover on the right flank.
  • A back line, midfield and bench full of players who held their shape, blocked shots, ran channels, and refused to break — without them, no goalkeeper in the world keeps a clean sheet against Spain.

Football is a collective sport, and Cabo Verde's 0–0 against Spain was a collective achievement.

What this moment means

His success is a reminder of what makes football special. In an era often dominated by famous clubs, enormous transfer fees and established superstars, the World Cup still creates space for stories of perseverance, character and national pride.

Vozinha's journey embodies that spirit, and the Blue Sharks together embody something even bigger: a small nation showing up on the biggest stage of all, and refusing to be intimidated.

Since that historic match, the entire Cape Verdean nation and its diaspora have come together in celebration. Across the islands, streets have been filled with the colours of the national flag. Families, friends and communities abroad have gathered to share in a moment that many never thought they would witness.

A personal note

Cabo Verde has more people living outside the country than within it. For many of us who grew up abroad, explaining where Cabo Verde is often required a long conversation. But after this match, everything feels different.

Millions of people who had never heard of Cabo Verde now know its name.

Personally, I am joyful that this visibility will bring greater recognition, opportunity and prosperity to our small nation. For Cape Verdeans, Vozinha and his teammates have become symbols of the country's growth and ambition. For the rest of the world, they have become one of the breakout stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

And for millions of new fans discovering this story, the Blue Sharks are proof that legends can emerge when opportunity meets preparation — and that sometimes the greatest heroes are found not among the forwards scoring goals, but among the goalkeepers refusing to concede them, and the teammates around them who make it possible.

How you can contribute

This article is part of a wider effort to gather Cape Verdean insights and facts online in a more dynamic way. It matters to me because growing up abroad meant never learning much of this, something many others in the diaspora can probably relate to.
